When calculating electrokinetic force, the convention has been to assume that there is no relative velocity of the fluid compared to the surface, which holds true for hydrophilic surfaces. However, this needs to be reconsidered for hydrophobic surfaces. Prof Hiroyuki Ohshima from Tokyo University of Science has conducted theoretical research on electrokinetic phenomena in colloidal particles for 50 years. Now, he has summarized some of the major findings in his field in a compelling review article.
