Microsoft has officially unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, marking one of the first premium computers to integrate NVIDIA’s newly announced RTX Spark platform for Windows on Arm. Positioned by the manufacturer as the most powerful Surface device ever built, this hardware release aims to challenge the Apple MacBook Pro directly by delivering a competitive combination of high-tier processing performance and power efficiency.

The laptop features a single-piece aluminum unibody chassis with a design footprint closely mirroring its Apple competitor, weighing approximately 4.4 pounds. It sports a 15-inch “PixelSense Ultra” touch-enabled Mini-LED display, which supports HDR content and reaches an intense peak brightness of 2,000 nits. Additionally, the device incorporates the largest haptic touchpad ever utilized across the entire Surface hardware lineup.
Internal processing power is driven by the NVIDIA RTX Spark platform. The top-tier configuration integrates an Arm-based 20-core CPU alongside a specialized Blackwell-architecture GPU featuring 6,144 CUDA cores.

This setup is estimated to mirror the performance of a discrete GeForce RTX 5070 Mobile GPU, drawing an adjustable thermal power design of up to 80 watts. The system accommodates up to 128 GB of ultra-fast unified LPDDR5X memory, backed by an advanced thermal cooling system to maintain peak performance during sustained, heavy processing workloads.
A major focus of the laptop is local artificial intelligence acceleration, achieving 1 PetaFLOPS of computational performance using FP4 data formatting. Microsoft and NVIDIA aim to leverage this to run complex AI agents natively. The architecture introduces OpenShell, working in tandem with NVIDIA’s NemoClaw security framework to enhance system control.
For connectivity and storage, the laptop offers toolless solid-state drive (SSD) upgrades and a comprehensive physical port selection. This includes two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, an HDMI output, a dedicated SD card reader, and a standard headphone jack. The Surface Laptop Ultra is scheduled for a retail release this autumn, with exact pricing and retail configurations expected to be disclosed soon.
