Microsoft has officially confirmed the pricing, release date, and technical specifications for its flagship Surface Laptop Ultra. Following its initial preview earlier this summer, the company announced during its keynote presentation in San Francisco that the new machine is scheduled to start shipping on October 16, with pre-orders opening immediately across the United States.

The entry-level model carries a starting price of $2,599. For this configuration, buyers receive a premium 15-inch mini-LED display, an expansive haptic trackpad, and three versatile USB-C ports. Under the hood, the base device is powered by an 18-core RTX Spark processor featuring 5,120 GPU cores alongside 24GB RAM. While this starter tier is not geared for running heavy local enterprise models, it provides ample performance for demanding everyday workflows such as video editing, creative photo production, data crunching, 3D modeling, and casual gaming.

A significant hardware innovation on the Surface Laptop Ultra is the introduction of the industry’s first breakaway USB-C port. Taking inspiration from proprietary solutions like Apple MagSafe and the legacy Surface Connect, this mechanism secures the connector magnetically to safeguard the computer from accidental cord snags. Unlike earlier implementations that depended on proprietary interfaces, this is a fully functional, universal USB-C connector that remains entirely compatible with conventional USB-C peripherals.

Positioned as Microsoft’s most advanced and highest-tier computing device to date, top-end configurations are built specifically for intensive computational tasks. The highest-specification variants target AI developers who require sufficient compute power to execute massive 120B parameter models locally, supporting intricate agentic workflows and advanced on-device processing directly within Windows.
