During the Android Dev Summit, Google confirmed that YouTube is coming to Android Auto “soon,” though no concrete timeline was provided. Despite earlier indications pointing to a release before the end of the year, the lack of even a beta version or official launch date as October comes to a close means drivers will have to exercise more patience.

Google’s development efforts appear heavily focused on Android Automotive, the native in-vehicle operating system that already features working video apps and browsers in testing. Meanwhile, Android Auto—which projects a user’s smartphone onto the car display—remains further down the development pipeline.

When it finally launches, YouTube playback in vehicles will be restricted to parked vehicles, serving as entertainment during stationary periods like charging or waiting in lines. Once the car is put in motion, the application will automatically switch to background audio playback for YouTube Premium subscribers.

According to 9to5Google, progress is also underway for the Cars App Library, which introduces fresh tools for audio, calling, and messaging, though these updates have yet to reach the general public. In the interim, some drivers utilize third-party workarounds like Fermata Auto, despite their known drawbacks regarding system stability and vehicle integration.
