OpenAI, the renowned creator of ChatGPT, is officially expanding its technological footprint into physical hardware. During an appearance on Fortune magazine’s Sources podcast hosted by Alyson Shontell, company CEO Sam Altman confirmed that OpenAI is actively developing a humanoid robot, with its first public demonstration slated for 2027.

According to Altman, the primary engineering challenge behind the humanoid project lies in developing an advanced artificial brain. This system must possess the capability to analyze complex environments in real time while simultaneously processing and responding to human commands. For example, a functional robot must be able to handle fragile items, such as glass, by calculating exact grip strength, trajectory, and speed to prevent breakage.

To overcome these hurdles, OpenAI leverages its foundational Dactyl project, which initially trained robotic hands to manipulate delicate objects using virtual simulations. This framework now drives the development of customized motors and actuators designed to translate digital intelligence seamlessly into precise physical movements. By modeling the hardware after a human body structure, the robot will be versatile enough to operate across virtually any environment with minimal modification, thereby optimizing manufacturing and operational costs.

While the premier demonstration is scheduled for 2027, commercial consumer availability for domestic environments remains years away. Initial production units will focus heavily on industrial infrastructure and construction applications, positioning OpenAI to compete directly in a crowded market alongside established robotics competitors like Tesla, Samsung, Figure AI, and BYD.

This strategic switch underscores OpenAI’s broader ambition to bridge advanced artificial intelligence with physical automation. As development progresses, industry experts anticipate that the intersection of generative AI models and robotics hardware will accelerate automation trends across global markets, marking a transformative milestone for the artificial intelligence sector in the coming years.
