Wearable technology continues to prove its value in healthcare. David Aladejobi, a 38-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran, discovered a potentially life-threatening condition thanks to health tracking features on his Apple Watch Ultra.

Initially, Aladejobi received a notification on his smartwatch warning him of suspected sleep apnea, a serious medical disorder characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep. Unfamiliar with the condition and busy with daily routines, Aladejobi initially dismissed the alert. However, after reflecting on his chronic snoring and persistent morning headaches, he decided to take action. He shared a screenshot of the smartwatch notification with his primary care physician, who noted that his headaches could indeed be linked to poor sleep quality.

Following a formal referral, Aladejobi underwent comprehensive evaluations at a specialized medical clinic. The clinical results confirmed an official sleep apnea diagnosis. Medical professionals emphasized that untreated sleep apnea carries severe health risks, including high blood pressure, cardiovascular complications, and even an increased risk of premature mortality.

To monitor respiratory patterns, Apple smartwatches utilize an internal accelerometer to track subtle physical movements associated with breathing disturbances over a period of time. Users typically need to wear the device consistently for thirty days across at least ten nights to allow the algorithm to detect signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea.

Grateful for the early warning, Aladejobi now advocates for paying close attention to smartwatch health data. He currently manages his condition by using a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) every night, significantly improving his sleep quality and overall well-being. Medical experts echo his sentiment, encouraging users not to ignore diagnostic notifications from wearables, as these accessible tools can bridge the gap between early detection and professional medical intervention.
