Sony is inviting PlayStation 5 owners in the United States to trade in their unused consoles for cash through a new trade-in initiative. Shared via an online forum, the promotional notifications outline a partnership with the resale platform Back Market to facilitate the process.

Under the program, consumers can receive up to $400 for a standard PlayStation 5 console bundled with two DualSense controllers. The final payout is determined after the partner platform inspects the returned hardware to verify its condition.

This corporate move follows a similar strategy by Microsoft, which recently contacted Xbox Series X and Series S users with comparable buyback proposals. Industry experts note that the global video game market faces rising costs and supply chain pressures, particularly regarding memory components, which have impacted hardware availability while older models remain accessible.

By reclaiming idle hardware, Sony aims to stimulate engagement within the PlayStation digital ecosystem. Reintroducing these devices to active users can drive purchases of video games, hardware accessories, and recurring subscriptions like PS Plus. Furthermore, companies are positioning inventory strategies ahead of major software releases, such as Grand Theft Auto VI, to maximize consumer activity.

Currently, this buyback campaign is exclusive to the United States and has not expanded to regions like Brazil. However, consumers in international markets continue to utilize secondary peer-to-peer platforms to buy and sell pre-owned hardware.
